why the nikon d4 is my workhorse:

signs of spring…

i’m neither an insect/nature photographer nor do i really care for insects too much. call it everybugaphobia. we just don’t jive.
i created this image of a bumble bee hanging around my head during an outdoor photo shoot. he or she scared the crap out of me but i decided to shoot the bee anyway.

nerd file:
motor drivin at 11fps, 1/8000, f/2.8 and ISO 5000 thanks to the uncanny power of my Nikon D4. was only working with the 24-70 and had to do some heavy cropping in post.
notice how that shutter stop the wings dead in their tracks.

DP Jordan Parrott working hard on the the film “All Hallow’s Eve.” His work is nothing less than amazing. Be sure to check out his reel at:

I created this image while working on the set as the BTS stills photographer. Here Jordan is getting some light readings with his Sekonic. Just out of focus, behind him is his beautiful RED EPIC rig.
nerd file:
1/1000 (lots of wiggle room)
f/2.8 (for some buttery bokeh)
ISO 10000 (no sweat)

wife…

yep, again, what can i say?

as a photographer i’m often exploring light. and with the Nikon D4 i’m known to push its limits, specifically in its low light capabilities which is hands down the best in the world.

on this evening, our living room was lit by nothing more than the TV. this can be recognized by the bluish light on stefanie’s face. subtle but it’s there. with the naked eye, the room was pretty dark but with the D4 and the nikkor 85 1.8, i was able to capture more than enough detail to get the subdued look i was going for. i could have thrown on a tripod and dragged the shutter even longer but i wanted to create only a splash of light in the scene. in post, i brought up the fill a tiny bit but not much else.

nerd file:
ISO 10,000! yep, i can play in this territory without breaking a sweat.
aperture was wide open on the Nikkor 85 f/1.8G, allowing whatever ambient was available to pour onto the enormous D4 sensor.
shutter was at 1/20. handheld this is on the slow side for this lens but i was able to steady myself enough to avoid any camera shake.
RAW file was processed with ACR and a few retouches made in PS to remove a distracting foreground element.

summary:
i’m thinking of adding this to the final image in THE STEFANIE PROJECT series on the website. i like how it represents the end of a day and would close out the series perfectly. hmmm.
